/r/QOTSA Official Band of the Week 29: PIXIES

2020.11.20 13:03 House_of_Suns /r/QOTSA Official Band of the Week 29: PIXIES

When we try to describe a taste, it is usually done by referencing other tastes or smells. Like, this Scotch tastes like a mixture of caramel overlaid with lilac and just a hint of rocket fuel and dirty socks. When we try to describe something we touched, we reference similar feelings. This would be like describing the feeling of touching a down blanket as being as soft as 10-ply. We do much the same thing when we describe a band or a genre of music. “This singer,” we say, “sounds like Debbie Harry and Tom Waits had an illicit affair, and the bastard child of that union was raised in an orphanage run by a strung-out Demi Lovato.”
Not for nothing, but I’m pretty sure that the singer in that description would be Taylor Momsen.
...but I digress.
The founding member of this week’s band once advertised for musicians who liked the music of Hüsker Dü and Peter, Paul, and Mary. In fact, the band is a study in contrasts - in style, in volume, in lyrical subject material, and from album to album. They are a band that never hit it big, but who influenced lots and lots of artists who did.
That's right. As requested, this week's featured artist is Pixies.
About Them
Wait, don’t you mean THE Pixies?
Nope. It’s Pixies. Just Pixies. That’s their name. Just like the name of the nation is Canada, not The Canada. Just one name, like Madonna and Xzibit and Sting and Prince and Eminem and Lorde. Like, if you put the word ‘the’ before any of those artists (The Eminem ?), it dramatically changes the meaning, so they are definitively known just by the one word.
Yeah, I wish it felt less awkward, but it is what it is.
So you know how you sometimes say that the time has come? As in, the time has come for a female, asian, black Vice-President? Well, that time for Pixies was really in the mid-1990s when Grunge and Alternative Rock ruled the airwaves.
That’s why it is such a bummer that they broke up in 1993.
Formed in Boston in 1986, Pixies were an incredibly influential and innovative band who truly paved the way for acts like Nirvana and The Smashing Pumpkins and Weezer and Radiohead. They were an evocative and eclectic mix of rock and folk and punk and laid-back surf sounds, with multiple vocalists and musical genres. Their lyrics ran the gamut from reincarnation to extraterrestrials to pop culture to mutilation. The band was founded by Charles Michael Kittridge Thompson IV. Recognizing that his name sounds like a Disney villain, he changed it to the uplifting and somewhat culturally insensitive Black Francis. Seriously, I’m not certain you could do something like that today.
Black Francis grew up as the son of bar owners in California and was influenced by his parents’ love of Folk music and Christian Rock. He was not exposed to Punk or Rock until his teens, which may explain on some level why the band’s music can veer so wildly from one style to another. After spending some time in Puerto Rico, he met co-founder Joey Santiago at the University of Massachusetts in the early 1980s.
Santiago was born in the Philippines in 1965. His family moved to America to escape Ferdinand Marcos in 1972. Santiago was obsessed with Iggy Pop and The Velvet Underground as a teenager and learned to play guitar. One evening at Uni he heard loud guitar cranking out down the hall and rushed to join in. It was Black Francis. The two bonded and became friends and roommates. They went to concerts - notably, Black Flag - and were inspired. Black Francis was a singer and guitarist and set about turning his life experiences into songs.
By 1986, the duo had a decision to make: drop out of school and go to New Zealand to see Halley’s Comet, or form a band. They chose to found Pixies. They put the aforementioned advertisement out in the paper to get a bass player and met Kim Deal, the band’s female co-singer. Kim Deal and her identical twin sister Kelley Deal grew up listening to Led Zeppelin and AC/DC. Kim became a prolific songwriter as a kid and learned the guitar. Sister Kelley played the bass and drums. Kim borrowed Kelley’s bass for the audition and nailed it.
Pixies offered Kelley Deal the drumming gig but she declined, not feeling like she was ready. Don’t feel too bad for her though - she moved to California to pursue a career in computer programming. No shit, true story. When that didn’t pan out, she picked up the guitar and joined the band The Breeders. So that turned out alright for her.
Pixies hired David Lovering to sit behind the kit because he was at Kim’s wedding reception. Kim’s husband recommended him. Lovering is (if you can believe it) an accomplished magician who has actually performed under the name The Scientific Phenomenalist.
Geez, man, save some ladies for the rest of us.
The dude was working at Radio Shack (fuck, he had all the dating advantages) and graduated with a degree in electronic engineering and had a job to build lasers. He drummed on the side for fun with a few bar bands. Goddam chick magnet. Lovering was also able to secure his parents’ garage as a rehearsal space. Honestly, is everything this man ever did an absolute amazing move of male seduction? Side note: this fucker was such a goddam stud that after Pixies broke up, he TURNED DOWN an opportunity to drum for the Foo Fighters.
Not.
Fucking.
Kidding.
Some guys have all the luck.
With the lineup set, the band started to get gigs in small bars in Boston. At one of these, they were discovered by record producer Gary Smith. Smith - who would later work with Billy Bragg and 10,000 Maniacs - knew talent when he saw it, and got the band into the studio to do some recording.
This series of recordings came to be known as The Purple Tape, because of the color of the background. The work was done over a period of three days and produced 17 tracks. SEVENTEEN. That is an enormous outpouring in a 72-hour period. Pixies’ new manager and local promoter Ken Goes took those recordings and shopped them to a number of record labels. One label, 4AD, took an interest and signed the band. Eight of the tracks from the Smith recordings were made into an EP called Come on Pilgrim, their first official release. Two of the tracks on the EP were sung in Spanish and two were about incest. Yep, you read that right.
Pixies followed up their 1987 EP debut by spending ten days in the studio recording their first full length album, Surfer Rosa. Two tracks on the album - Gigantic and Where Is My Mind? - were released as singles in 1988. The mix of hard distorted rock and bizarre lyrics with peaceful pop melodies made it unlike anything else in music at the time. Their fresh sound (and perhaps the racy cover) brought the band legit airplay on college radio in the US.
Over in Europe, though, the album rocketed up the Indie charts. Just like health care and no need for gun ownership, Pixies were much more popular in Europe than in their own country. Pixies toured heavily in support of the album, and found a growing number of fans of their unique sound. Surfer Rosa also had an impact on a number of artists, most notably Kurt Cobain. Cobain would state that the album Nevermind was directly inspired by it. Well, I guess both albums did have nudity on the cover, so there is that. Cobain went so far as to hire the producer of Surfer Rosa, Steve Albini, to work on In Utero.
The album Doolittle was released in 1989 and picked up right where Surfer Rosa left off. This is because Francis was writing songs for the album while the band was touring. Doolittle got the band signed to the major label Elektra. It spawned the singles Debaser, Here Comes Your Man, and Monkey Gone to Heaven. Songs on it covered disparate subjects like gouging out eyes and murdesucide as well as environmentalism and biblical stories. This album is like taking one song off of each King Gizzard album and trying to mash them together. It is like David Lynch doing meth and then magic mushrooms and then coke, one after another.
It was wildly popular in the underground scene and hit #8 on the British charts. Here Comes Your Man even charted in the US. It actually sold decently and was a moderate success overall. But what is really most notable about the album is not so much a single song, as their use of dynamics. Pixies pioneered the sudden swings of loud to quiet in songs, and made it their thing.
Unfortunately, the pressure of recording the album and the constant touring were leading to cracks in the band. Deal and Francis began to bicker and spat almost constantly. This escalated to the point where Francis hurled a guitar at Deal during a concert, and Deal refused to perform. The source of the conflict was songwriting: Francis wanted creative control and so did Deal. The tension grew so high that the band took a break. Francis did a solo tour in that time and Deal went off to found the band The Breeders - the same one sister Kelley would join.
Since Deal found a creative outlet elsewhere, she came to accept that Pixies really had only one singer: Francis. After a hiatus of over a year, the band came back together to record the album Bossanova. With a sound more like Surf Rock and songs about space aliens, it was another departure from the norm. It was also the first Pixies record to not have any songs by Deal.
That just made it more popular in Europe. No kidding, it went to number 3 on the UK Charts. Two singles from the album - Velouria and Dig for Fire - got ample airplay. They once again began to tour, and once again hit the grind of the road.
The band entered the studio one last time in 1991 to record Trompe le Monde. The most notable thing about this record - apart from it being their last studio album - was how little it featured Kim Deal. One reviewer said it was “...essentially Black Francis’ solo debut.” Bossanova had no songs written by her, but still had her as a vocalist. This record pushed her into the harmony role. Trompe le Monde had four singles: Planet of Sound, Alec Eiffel, Letter to Memphis, and Head On (apply directly to the forehead). The record got them great gigs, including opening for U2 on the Zoo TV tour.
Abruptly in 1993, Pixies came to an end. Black Francis simply announced on BBC - without even telling the other members of the band - that they were over. The constant touring, the bickering, the strain of recording and the changing dynamic as Deal was slowly squeezed out of the band had given rise to conflict that overshadowed any growing success they had achieved.
From 1993 to 2003, the band members fell into solo projects (or magic performances) and it seemed like things were pretty bleak for fans. Unless you liked pulling rabbits out of hats, I mean. Then you were golden.
But in 2003, they decided to cash in on that sweet nostalgia give it another go. They got together and released a series of short EPs to justify touring and hit the circuit again. Fans didn’t care. They just wanted to see them play. They did gimmicks like play the album Doolittle track-for-track on the occasion of its 20th anniversary. They had fun, they made cash, and fans got to see them. All was right in the world.
But the tensions slowly rose over time and by 2013, the band announced that Deal was no longer a member. The slow breakup that had begun with Bossanova was finally formalized. She was replaced by Kim Shattuck from Pandoras, who was in turn replaced by Paz Lenchantin of A Perfect Circle. Lenchantin was made a permanent member of the band in 2016.
The lineup with Lenchantin has done more than tour: they no-shit released new music in 2016. The album Head Carrier was no mere collection of EP tracks; it was a legit new record. And they followed this up last year. The album Beneath the Eyrie dropped in September of 2019 and once again moved the band in new directions.
The influence of Pixies cannot be understated. Kurt Cobain loved them. U2 still love them. Radiohead swear by them. The late great David Bowie was a huge Pixies fan and when touring with his side project Tin Machine in 1991, Bowie and the boys covered Debaser. He also covered the song Cactus on his 2002 album Heathen.
Even if you don’t care for them without Kim Deal (when is Nick coming back?), you gotta love that they are still making music.

Pixies’ current bassist Paz Lenchantin was in the band A Perfect Circle with resident QotSA vampire and guitarist Troy Van Leeuwen. Lenchantin is also credited as playing the strings on Mosquito Song.
Josh did a radio show a number of years ago discussing the history of the band.
Dave Grohl thought so much of Dave Lovering’s magic act (these are the Daves I know, I know...these are the Daves I know) that he offered him a chance to drum for the Foo Fighters.
Their Music
Velouria - probably the laziest video ever made
Cactus
Gigantic - Live in 1988
Gouge Away - live on BBC in 2019
Monkey Gone to Heaven
Wave of Mutilation - UK Surf and Original
Debaser
Where Is My Mind - Oh look! I have eyes on a locomotive.
Hey - Seriously Lumineers, Pixies did it first and weirder.
Here Comes Your Man - Clearly they didn't have the room for lip syncing in their 50$ video budget.
Show Them Some Love
/thepixies
Yeah, I know I made a big deal about it not being THE Pixies, but it turns out that /pixies was already taken and is a private subreddit...which leads me to believe that this is some kind of short hair fetish club.
Really, your guess is as good as mine.

2019.09.18 05:47 AHSWeeknd Honeymoon 4 years later. Revisiting Lana Del Rey's dreamiest album.

I wrote an analysis on Honeymoon, and I thought y'all might enjoy it since the album turns 4 today!
Lana Del Rey’s Honeymoon was released four years ago today. The album went on to gain critical acclaim and sold 116,000 units in its first week. Many fans dismiss the album due to its departure from that which Lana is known for, while other fans claim it’s one of her best. The album is similar to Lana’s first two commercial albums, Born To Die and Paradise.
Honeymoon is a follow-up to Ultraviolence. By the end of Ultraviolence, Lana has found Hollywood and the fame she wanted. And in Honeymoon Lana is living it up in California, dreaming of a better life. This album is layered with references that gives the listener something to odd think about. Honeymoon is an intriguingly haunting dream that Lana Del Rey crafts up.
I will be going through Honeymoon, beyond the story, into what each song meant and formulating a theory that could potentially explain why she had to tell this story. To start, I must mention that Lana is credited as head-writer on all of the tracks with the exception of Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood, which is a cover. I won’t be discussing the producers, secondary writers or any events from the Honeymoon era; I’m speaking purely on the album.
I will talk about the album the way it has been divided on the vinyl edition.

Honeymoon Side A - The Daydream

Honeymoon (Audio Video)
- The album begins with an evident violin, reminding the listener of a film-noir opening theme. The title track is subtle and is nearly six minutes long.
- Near the end of the song, Lana repeats the line “Dreamin’ away your life.” That line is highlighted because the listeners are about to embark on a dream, listening to the dream that Lana wants.
Honeymoon
the word honeymoon itself is known as a get-away from the world, where two lovers are by themselves, spending time with each other. The honeymoon phase of a relationship is where a couple is basically one, neither of them can do anything wrong. But the reality of the phase is that it won’t last forever. By the end of the first track, Lana is repeating that one line to ensure that the Honeymoon stays forever.
Music To Watch Boys To (Audio Video)
- The second track is Lana’s thoughts interspersed through this song.
- In the video, Lana is never seen with a man, she is simply in a garden, listening to her music and later found with other girls in a pool; which could simply be a dream of her giving the men their dream.
Lies can buy eternity.
Lana knows that men won’t stay, but her memories of those men may stay forever.
Pink flamingos always fascinated me.
Lana has expressed (through her music) that she needs men in her life; she is dependent on them. Flamingos fascinate her because they stand on one leg, they can depend on themselves to do that; Lana feels as if she could never do that.
Terrance Loves You (Audio)
- Lana has talked about this song being her favorite off of Honeymoon, due to its jazz/blues influence.
- The song is about staying strong after facing loss. The title may reference David Bowie’s brother Terry Burns, who committed suicide in 1985, the song also samples Space Oddity in the bridge.
- The verses of this song can be seen as confusing but they are very poetic in nature. Similar to contemporary poetry.
I put the radio on, hold you tight in my mind. Isn’t strange that you’re not here with me.
Since Lana might be referencing Terry Burns with this song, it wouldn’t be surprising if the entire song is about Lana missing her family. Not only did she leave her lovers in New York, she also left her family.

Side A has an emphasis on Lana’s thoughts and the concepts of her daydreams while living alone in California. The video for Honeymoon is just Lana, in the past, a similar concept was made for the Ultraviolence video. Both of which were title tracks and both which Lana sang about a dreamy love that she prayed for. The lack of a man in the video emphasizes the concept that it’s all in Lana’s head.
Her thoughts are consumed by dreams of men (Honeymoon and Music To Watch Boys To). But she also thinks about her family (Terrance Loves You), however, her priorities are confirmed by the numbers; two for the boys, one for the family.

Honeymoon Side B - Hollywood Heartbreak

God Knows I Tried (Audio)
- The side B opener is a devastating track about Lana’s true relationship with Hollywood, and her attempt to escape it.
- Lana Del Rey is a popstar more than she is a rockstar, she appears on magazines, the paparazzi follow her and the media covers her personal life, and not to mention, her mistakes are forgiven but never forgotten. So, this song is about her admitting that she can’t escape this life, but at least God knows that she tried her hardest.
- By the end of the song she repeats the line “Let there be light.” She wishes to travel out of the darkness onto a peaceful life. She wishes for the sun to shine on her again.
On Monday, they destroyed me. But by Friday, I'm revived.
Everyone will say bad things about her and ruin her reputation but by the end of the week, she puts out new music and they love her again.
I've got nothing much to live for. Ever since I found my fame.
Lana talked about wanting fame on Ultraviolence and on Honeymoon we come to find out that she got exactly what she wanted. And now she has no major goal left to achieve.
High By the Beach (Audio Video)
- The first single off of the album is about Lana’s desire to escape the world she was trapped in. The “boy” she references in the song is her way of referencing the paparazzi/media.
- In Lust For Life, we are treated to a song similar to High By the Beach called 13 Beaches. Both of the songs share a similar concept, the concept being that Lana can’t find a beach where she isn’t free from the paparazzi. It ended up taking her thirteen tries and on top of that, she is paranoid that they could still be out to get her.
- The video for High By the Beach is Lana’s “glamorized paranoia” that the paparazzi is still out for her and the only way she can be sure of getting rid of them is by killing them.
Lights, camera, acción. I'll do it on my own.
Within the Lana Del Rey fandom, this line is very well received because it references a track from Lizzy Grant a.k.a Lana Del Rey called Put Me in a Movie in which Lana says “Lights, camera, acción. You know I can’t make it on my own.” And five years later, she changes the lyrics. Character development.
Anyone can start again. Not through love, but through revenge. Through the fire, we're born again. Peace by vengeance, brings the end.
Lana makes sure to take her image into her own hands. If the paparazzi wouldn’t back away on their own, she knew she’d have to take matters into her own hands. Do things her way.
Freak (Audio Video)
- Lana is with her past lover, a man that she treated like a cult leader.
- She —once again— wishes to be under his control. They drink, take drugs and she begs him to come with her to California so that she can feel the passion that she sadly lost when she moved to California.
Looking back, my past It all seems stranger than a stranger.
Lana no longer recognizes a life of being in tragic romances, where she felt the need to be controlled by a man and/or alcohol.
If you stay, I’ll stay.
She promises to stay with him, only if he stays in California. She’s straightened her priorities, she’d love to be with him but only if he stayed with her.

Side B is presented as Lana’s rude awakening, she was daydreaming in side A as if it were a honeymoon but was soon awakened by the cruel reality of fame. She had had enough of the paparazzi and media, so she killed them, vengeance guided her to finding peace at her favorite place (the beach) and though she wanted her lover to stay, he couldn’t. She’s left in a state of sadness.
What she wanted turned out to be a tragic wasteland, feeding off her talent. The past couldn’t repair the damage done to her; she’s alone, but not for long.

Honeymoon Side C - Desire into a Dream

Art Deco (Audio)
- Lana notices the world around her, she focuses on the youth thriving in California. They live freely, they live like the stereotypical 1920s, partying hard and living in the moment. Lana wants what they have, she doesn’t want the burden of fame any longer. She wants to feel the way she did when she had anonymity.
- Many people assumed that this song was about Azealia Banks, Lana assured them that it definitely was not.
A little party never hurt no one.
This line is repeated quite a lot throughout the song, though it isn’t part of the chorus; it’s also part of the outro. The line promotes a sense of freedom, it’s a philosophy that makes the listener believe that doing something a bit crazy or outrageous isn’t the end of the world. It gears the listener for that which is to come.
Burnt Norton (Interlude) (Audio)
- A turning point in the album.
- Burnt Norton is part of a poem by T.S Elliot. This part of the poem establishes a “what if…?” scenario. Lana thinks to herself about the possibility of that which could happen.
- The interlude talks about that which has already happened and that which never happened, and how both of those scenarios lead to the same time period, into the same sort of life.
Footfalls echo in the memory Down the passage which we did not take Towards the door we never opened Into the rose-garden.
Lana journeys into a memory and thought. She dreams about something that never happened, she ventures deep into her mind making up a world for herself that has an essence of the reality we saw in the past two sides and Art Deco.
- A rose is a romantic flower, Lana ends the interlude on the sentence “Into the rose garden.” She enters a romantic place that she’s never legitimately ventured into.
Religion (Audio)
"Everything is fine now.” The song opens with this line, the things that troubled Lana before are no longer there, she’s free of worry. Now she can fall for a man, she can worship him; she does just that.
It never was about the money or the drugs. For you, there’s only love. […] Even when the storms come, in the eye, we'll stay. No need to survive now, all we do is play.
This love is different than the love Lana had before, she isn’t worried about obtaining her one true goal (fame). She got all she wanted, and she’s free to die with this man.
Salvatore (Audio)
- Salvatore is defined as savior. Lana continues to have a religious desire for this man.
- He takes her on a plane, shows her the ocean, the city lights and much more; he’s showing Lana his perspective, as she falls into a deeper love.
I adore you, can't you see you're meant for me?
This man is treated like a king, Lana worships him and wants him to notice how much she loves him, and how they’d make a perfect couple.
Now it's time to eat Soft ice cream.
Lana is enjoying herself while she is with this man, she makes him wait and doesn’t give it all away. She wants to maintain the upper hand.

Side C is a journey from a desire into a dream. Lana wants to be free again, the way she was when she was younger but now that she’s famous the only way she can do that is in her mind. So, she dreams up a possibility of a love that she’s never had before, a love that could’ve been possible if she had anonymity in California. She dreams about this man that is her way of living, a king that loves her and admires while she’s equally as powerful as he is. Her desire of being pushed around no longer exists, she wants a relationship where she has a say.
Observing the youth of California got Lana to remember her past when she was free to love a man without worry. She ventures into her mind, into a state of desire where she falls madly in love with the perfect man. She’s in control, but she is about to face heartbreak.

Honeymoon Side D - Peace by Vengeance

The Blackest Day (Audio)
- Many fans of Lana Del Rey acknowledge The Blackest Day to be one of her most darkest/depressing songs. It conveys a rude awakening to Lana’s fantasy.
- So far, the album has journeyed us into the world of Lana Del Rey, in which she calls the shots, but The Blackest Day takes us into a breakup; one that Lana can’t handle.
- After several attempts at staying strong, Lana can no longer take it; she experiences the five stages of grief. Denial and isolation (the first verse), anger (the bridge), bargaining (the second verse), depression (the chorus) and acceptance (the outro).
- This dream of a man wanted to walk away, and Lana felt nothing but pain. She felt broken over the reality of Hollywood and the people she left behind just to obtain it. But in this dream, she wishes to stay in command of her reality.
- The bridge of The Blackest Day is another turning point in the album, it represents Lana’s vengeful side fully taking over and stop at nothing to re-obtain this man’s love. The tone of the bridge mirrors the tone of the chorus from a 1963 song, I Will Follow Him by Peggy March. Today, that song reads as a song talking about a woman stalking a man till he is hers forever. The bridge of The Blackest day highlights Lana’s vengeful love for that man.
I want you where I got you. You’re deader than ever.
Lana’s anger drives her to basically kidnap this man and make him love her, till death do they part.
I’m on my own again.
After the bridge, the rude awakening comes in. Lana wanted to be reliant on a guy, but back in reality she only has herself. There’s no one else who she can look to for help, the way she lived before stays a memory. She repeats the words “I’m on my own again” in a sense of defeat, though she may have kidnapped this man, it’s only in her dreams.
24 (Audio)
- This song was allegedly recorded to be the Bond theme for Bond24 known as Spectre, though it didn’t make the cut, it still suited Honeymoon.
- In 24 Lana feels she has a limited time with her lover before they get caught either by the paparazzi or the police.
- The song is packed with metaphors, mainly Lana warning her lover about the kind of woman she is, the lengths she will go to secure her love. Even the slightest glance in her direction may capture you.
If you lie down with dogs, then you’ll get fleas.
A notorious line. Lana uses this line twice in this song, it means that you should be wary of the people you choose to be around because you will come to close to their darker side. Lana tells this to her lover, explaining how his being kidnapped is mostly his fault.
Give me your heat. Give me your diamonds. You hit that street. And my crooked words. You count to three. While they're all dying. You're hard to reach. You're cold to touch.
She wants every part of him, when he tries to get away, she’s there to pull him back in. He witnesses her terrifying world. As the beat stops, he falls in love. Lana has alluded to being a witch before, so it’s likely that she put him under a love spell to bind him to her forever.
Swan Song (Audio)
- The penultimate track on Honeymoon is an oath to love. Lana and wants her and her lover to forget about the lives they live; she’s finally at peace with letting go of Hollywood. Lana feels unstoppable without the burden she had before.
- After heartbreak, she wants to escape into a dreamland, where there is nothing but bliss.
Do you like where you’ve been? Where you’re going to?
Lana asks him if his career and his future are worth it. She herself, has seen the dead-end that is fame and she’s ready to let go of it; it opened her eyes into the void of the world and how meaningless everything can be.
Put your white tennis shoes on and follow me.
This line starts the song and is repeated three times in the outro. Tennis shoes aren’t instantly fashionable and are worn for comfort and ease; a metaphor for retirement.
Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood (Audio)
- Just like Ultraviolence, Lana decides to end Honeymoon with a jazz cover, a cover that perfectly wraps up the album. The song is about making mistakes and feeling the need to justify behavior.
- She doesn’t want people to take her words the wrong way. And she wants to be perceived on the basis of her words rather than the words of others.

Side D is what wraps up Honeymoon, it marks Lana’s departure from Hollywood and her acceptance of reality. She experiences a rude awakening, she won’t always get what she wants, but that doesn’t stop her. After facing heartbreak Lana continues to pursue her love and eventually hypnotize him into loving her forever. Though half of Side C and Side D are Lana’s dream, she feels free in her mind; it’s the only escape she has left. And in her perfect escape, there may be heartbreak but she continues to be the femme fatale that gets what she wants.
Her dream may feature heartbreak, but not for long. Lana Del Rey will stop at nothing to get what she wants, even if it means leaving everyone behind or even bringing out the witch powers. Leaving fame for the beaches and for a man.

Though Honeymoon is overlooked and dismissed, it an undeniably a great album. Lana Del Rey crafted up a story that continues straight after Ultraviolence, and as we know, Ultraviolence is a prime example of the Lana the world used to know, and Honeymoon is the final chapter for that Lana.
Honeymoon should be taken as the old Lana Del Rey’s swan song, it is the finale of who she was to the world before. “I made the first four albums for me.
In conclusion, Honeymoon is a beautiful album with allusions to Lana Del Rey’s life after Born To Die fame. She wanted Hollywood, left her life behind, got what she wanted and regretted it; making her a vengeful femme fatale that’ll get what she wants.

So what do ya’ll think? How would you rank this album? As a long-time fan of hers, I must admit that I have always loved this album. I think it’s amazing and it speaks volumes to the concepts of dreams and reality.
Also, here’s a movie that makes a great visual component for Honeymoon is, The Love Witch (NSFW/spoiler-filled trailer). It’s about a modern-day witch that uses spells and magic to get men to fall in love with her, also Samantha Robinson looks a little like Lana. If you like the album you should check it out.
I wrote a similar analysis for Ultraviolence three months back, feel free to check it out.
Don’t forget to stream Honeymoon!

2017.09.09 05:20 Wafflemonster2 The Next Day: Survivor (Round 3)

SURVIVOR

This particular love IS lost. Love Is Lost(Hello Steve Reich Mix by James Murphy) has been eliminated with 5 votes, coming to 17% of all votes this round. This was another similar round, with this song being eliminated with just 5 votes, right ahead of the song in second with 4 votes. Just as with last round, a pretty sizeable amount of all songs recieved between 1 to 3 votes each as well.

I absolutely adore the original Love Is Lost, and this remix is definitely no exception. As far as remixes go, this one is just phenomenal, and adds enough new layers to the song to sound surprisingly fresh, and unique compared to the original. This remix essentially incorporates two more songs in to this one, with one being "Clapping Music" by Steve Reich, and the other being the beloved Ashes to Ashes by Bowie himself, and they just work so, so well together.
The way that the clapping(which is the Steve Reich part of the title) in the intro slowly transitions into the song and becomes a unique part of the percussion, is just brilliant and the way that the main melody to Ashes to Ashes is interpolated into the song, is flawless and always sends a chill down my spine(in a good way).

Most important to me in regards to this song however, are the two music videos. Both of them are works of art, with the long one being breathtaking, and the short one beautifully strange. The long one is very futuristic and extremely abstract, but transitions into a slightly more normal music video(with intentional visual glitches, and is very NSFW) about 5 minutes in.
The short one on the other hand features Bowie quite prominently, as well as a set of dummies that were created, and were actually meant to be used in a music video concept for the song "The Pretty Things Are Going to Hell", way back in 1999(that never came to fruition). There were originally four; a Pierrot one, Ziggy, Major Tom, and Thin White Duke, but unfortunately just the Pierrot and Thin White Duke seemed to survive, and ultimately end up in that music video. In total, this shorter video allegedly only cost Bowie $12.99 to make, since the only expenditure was for an SD card used to film it.
Interestingly, back in 2013 when I visited the "David Bowie Is..." exhibition, they actually had the Pierrot dummy with Bowie's face projected on to it, on display!

2017.02.07 01:57 EvilEyp David Bowie Vevo Missing Videos?

I recently went to YouTube to watch the music video for The Hearts Filthy Lesson, as I was just in that kind of mood, so I searched for it, but to my surprise, it wasn't there. I went over to the vevo page to search for it, and none of his stuff before clips from A Reality Tour were there. Does anybody know what is up with that?

2016.07.12 07:20 delicious_grownups Wayhomework artist #61 - Arcade Fire!

Tonight's wayhomework artist is the one and only, Arcade Fire (main site), this year's high anticipated headlining act.
I first heard of Arcade Fire in the fall of 2009, after seeing a trailer for the Spike Jonze film, Where The Wild Things Are. I fell in love with the rendition of their song Wake Up and asked a friend if he knew who the band was.
"It's the Arcade Fire, I think." he said to me in our smoky, dimly lit college apartment.
"Are they any good?" I asked, my cigarette hanging on in errant desperation as I waited for the answer. Was this band incredible, or had they - like so many others - written one truly brilliant song among a garbage pile of others?
"Meh, not really my thing. But I bed YOU'D love em."
And boy was he right. I went and saw the movie and was disappointed to find that the song was not featured in the film (although a decent enough film in itself). I went immediately to my little sister, who shares similar musical tastes as me, and asked her if she had heard of them.
"delicious_grownups" she said, "they're like my favorite band! How have you not heard of them yet?"
In truth, I had heard their name but fully expected them to be some sort of Panic At the Disco or Fallout Boy style fly-by-night organization. But at her urging, I took her copies of their freshman and sophomore albums.
From there, the rest is a mostly shared history.
Arcade Fire is a Montreal-based band, led by lead singer Win Butler (a Texas transplant), his wife Regine Chassagne, his brother Will Butler, Richard Reed Parry, Tim Kingsbury, and Jeremy Gara.
The group formed in 2001, after Win Butler moved to Montreal with original member, Josh Deu, and met his future wife. The band was playing live shows not long after, and in 2003 they released self titled EP (sorry, formatting) after recording in Win Butler's family's home in Maine.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arcade_Fire_(EP)
They released the EP online and sold physical copies at their live shows. The EP (unofficially known as "Us Kids Know") features an early version of No Cars Go, eventually re-recorded for their second album.
Their debut album, Funeral [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Funeral_(album)] (sorry, formatting), was released in 2004 and produced five singles:
Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels)
Neighborhood #2 (Laika)
Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)
Rebellion (Lies)
and the aforementioned "Wake Up"
The album received nearly universal acclaim and has appeared at the very top of the most number of "best of the 00's" lists (just behind Radiohead's "Kid A"), and is hailed as a modern classic.
Their second album, Neon Bible was released in 2007 and debuted at the #1 position in both Canada and Ireland, as well as #2 in the US. While Funeral gave them some clout and helped to pave the way for them, it was Neon Bible that really pushed Arcade Fire into the limelight. It was on this album that "No Cars Go" was re-recorded. Here are both versions of the song for you to compare the progress.
Neon Bible version
Us Kids Know EP version
Side Note: the violin piece from Neighborhood #4 (7 Kettles) is strikingly similar to the structure of The Woodlands National Anthem from the EP. There is simply no other place in the world that I could include this information.
Between the release of their second and third albums, the band put together footage from their Neon Bible tour and packaged it as a short music documentary entitled, "Miroir Noir" (which you can watch here, in its entirety, FO FREE!)
In the spring of 2010, I'd been head over heels in love with Arcade Fire for several months. Their first two albums had painted my entire last year of college. A fondness for these songs is deeply ingrained in my own personal life, as is most music for most people. Yet, upon discovering (one drunken night on my last spring break ever) that several of my friends from home were devout arcade fire fans, they were shocked to hear that I had not yet seen the documentary. It was just another piece to the Arcade Fire puzzle that I had just discovered. Highlights of the film include: the band undergoing hypnosis, playing in bumper cars, performing in a series of elevators, and performing in front of super pumped crowds, with bits of audio and phone calls from the band all peppered in.
I met my fiance in June of 2010, and by that point I'd been forcing pretty much everyone to listen to Arcade Fire. She acquiesced, as she liked me, but found that she in fact loved the band herself. One of my earliest memories of us as a couple is of sitting her car on the way back from the beach, listening to Ocean of Noise and her saying for the first time... "You know, I really love this band."
We've been listening ever since. But imagine our excitement when we found out, just a few months later, that the band was set to release a brand new album! The Suburbs [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Suburbs_(album)] was released in August of 2010. The album peaked at #1 in Belgium, Canada, Ireland, Norway, Portugal, the UK, and the US. It won the 53rd grammy awards Album of the Year, and was the first indie act to do so. The album released more singles than any other individual album with six in total:
The Surburbs
We Used to Wait
Ready to Start
City With No Children
Speaking In Tongues (which did not appear in the original track listing, but appears on the deluxe additions and features David Byrne of The Talking Heads)
and Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains) - this song is easily my favorite song on this album, and in my top five favorites of all their songs. It inspired this painting - painted by the same guy who made me watch Miroir Noir - which I then purchased from him for 300 dollars. It still hangs in my living room and will always come with me no matter what. It has the lyrics to the chorus scrawled along the outer edge.
All during the promotion and release of the Suburbs, I said to myself "god dammit I need to go see this band, I don't care how much it costs." But one thing or another prevented me seeing them. In 2011, they headlined Bonnaroo. I was still in the early days of my festing, and wasn't financially able to drive from New Jersey to Tennessee, a trek which is further from my home than wayhome is. They played Coachella that year as well, another seemingly impossible trek considering my finances. I opted for a small non-camping festival instead that year.
In 2012, 2013, and 2014, I attended firefly music festival in Dover, DE, and each year I hoped upon hope that Arcade Fire would somehow make an appearance as the headlining act. No such luck.
The release of their late 2013 album, Reflektor had me again hoping against hope that they would, at the very least, be making festival stops in my part of the world. Even in 2014, when they once again returned as a headlining act at Coachella, I was dismayed to see that firefly had been overlooked. There was one Philadelphia date on that tour, and ticket prices were astronomical - easily the cost of a festival in itself.
I settled for just listening to Reflektor in all its double-disk glory and found myself enormously satisfied. The album peaked at #1 in the Canada, Ireland, the US, the UK, and Belgium again, while peaking at #3 in Norway. The promotional campaign featured odd street graffiti that was found in several major cities worldwide. Reflektor was produced by James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem (although he downplays his role in it) and features backing vocals from the one and fucking only, David Bowie. They were dubbed by Rolling Stone as one of the biggest acts in the world (BONUS: Win talks about rehearsing a song with Neil Young in the article) just for anyone still questioning their headliner status :D
The singles from Reflektor include:
Reflektor - featuring David Bowie
We Exist
Afterlife
And they subsequently produced another musical documentary, 2015's The Reflektor Tapes which was positively acclaimed. The album has a number of multicultural influences. Namely, various types of Haitian and Jamaican musical stylings. My favorites from this album (which are some of my overall favorites as well) include:
It's Never Over (Oh Orpheus)
Joan of Arc
and my top contender for favorite Arcade Fire song (along with Wake Up, the Well and the Lighthouse, and Sprawl II), a real hectic, chaotic jam called Here Comes the Night Time
So, upon hearing about wayhome last year, my first thought was "Oh man... canada, festival, ARCADE FIRE?!" But with the addition of Neil Young as the big act last year, I knew those hopes were dashed. I'm planning on marrying that fiance of mine in October, and money has been fuckin tight - this is understating it. So, we had reluctantly resigned to forego a festival this year in an effort to save money. We made a fucking pact, and we said there were only 3 acts that we'd travel to a festival to see.
  1. Hall and Oates, which I satisfied by going to see them Sunday night.
  2. David Bowie - who is possibly my all time favorite musician and a personal idol. We... well, we all know how that wound up :(
  3. Arcade Fire.
Just before the lineup dropped I was all but willing to put festing on hold for a year, maybe go to a local fest or something, and save the cash. But... but then they drop this fucking doozie on me. One of three dates in North America? "Fuck Panorama" we said, "we're going back to wayhome."
This band has meant a lot to me over the last five or six years, and finally getting to see them live is going to fulfill a personal goal that I didn't think I'd get to do so late in the game. I am beyond excited. Here's my secret hopes. If you look at the album release dates for all of their albums thus far, they are each about 3 years apart. Considering that their last album was in 2013, well... I think it's very likely we're going to hear some brand new material, or hopefully the announcement of a new album.
My second, secret, private hopes? They do some tribute to their friend and admirer, the late great David Bowie. Seeing them perform Life on Mars would be a pinnacle of my life, and you can rest assured that I'd weep like a little girl.
Here are some other videos of some of their great performances and other little things to check out:
Here's their YouTube/Vevo Page
The Well and the Lighthouse - Big Day Out Sydney, 2008
Afterlife - Live on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, 2014
No Cars Go - Pinkpop 2014
Sprawl II - MTV World Stage, 2010
Reflektor - Glastonbury, 2014
Month of May>Rebellion (Lies) - Coachella, 2011. Just look at that guy bang that fuckin' drum during Rebellion.
Wake Up - Coachella, 2014. They finish the song by performing through the crowd. It goes on for four more minutes.
Wake Up>Sprawl II - Bonnaroo, 2011
Here Comes the Night Time>Wake Up - Lollapalooza Brazil, 2014. Another one where they finish in the crowd.
Supposedly, they teased a few Nirvana songs and a Sex Pistols song at Nos Alive in Lisbon just the other night. The article reports that they did not play any new material. My guess is they're saving for us folks here in North America! We can dream can't we?
So, against my better financial judgment, I am returning to the Line for Wayhome's sophomore year primarily for this band right here. If not for them headlining, or the reanimated corpse of David Bowie, I probably wouldn't have made the choice to come. But, in addition to Arcade Fire, I have found myself (for the second year in a row) falling in love with SO FUCKING MANY bands from Canada and abroad because of the lineup. And this year, with the more structured and semi-routine Wayhomework posts, I have really taken the time to get to know a lot of the acts. Although Arcade Fire shares a timeless part of my life that has been captured in memento and song, I've thoroughly enjoyed every single wayhomework post I've done. As this one is my last, and is the last headliner, I can only hope that I've done the band justice. Please don't miss this for the world. As always, do your homework, and we'll see you on the Line! We are down to just 10 days my friends! GET HYPE!!!
