Katherine Heigl dating

I just noticed something and I'm confused. Are OG characters coming back?

2020.11.18 05:18 TotalFox2 I just noticed something and I'm confused. Are OG characters coming back?

I was randomly sifting through the GA page on imdb and I noticed that some actors have 2020 as their last episode date. Some of the actors I noticed were Sara Ramirez(callie), Jessica Capshaw(Arizona), Katherine Heigl(Izzie), TR(George), Jerrika(Stephanie) and Sandra(Cristina).
Are they coming back for the final season, or is it just some fans messing around?
Also I noticed that the episode count seems wierd. Bailey and Webber are shown to be appearing in 367 episodes and Mer in 366. This cannot be true, because Meredith is in every episode of Grey's, atleast on credit, as are most actors. Even though they don't appear, they are credited for the episode which is what imdb counts. So how is it possible that Bailey and webber are in more episodes than Mer?

2020.11.18 03:22 ss2811 If Izzie & George stayed...

I was thinking the other day - imagine if both Izzie & George didn’t leave when they did, and they were still in the show. What would happen? How can you see things turning out for them?
Of course, we know that Izzie now is an attending oncologist and back together with Alex with their two kids. A happy ending. I wonder if Katherine Heigl hadn’t left in season 6, what the plans would have been for Izzie Stevens. After the whole cancer ordeal, I would’ve been intrigued to see where she would go from there.
Same with George, if he hadn’t have tragically died then I wonder where he’d be now. Maybe they would have had him go off to the army for a few seasons and then he comes back? I can see him developing PTSD similar to Owen, and they’d unite over their shared experience. I could see him maybe dating April.

2020.10.05 09:32 Shop_Difficult Katherine Heigl and Steven Seagal.

Ok I know I am late but I just read this article of Katherine Heigl talking about how it was to work with Steven Seagal as a sixteen year old girl, and it just makes me sick to my stomach. Like if I was in her shoes I would be pretty weirded out that this 25+ year old man was dating girls my age. Like what? And some of the pictures of them together is just unsettling. Like Hollywood sucks especially for kids just trying to live their dreams. And the fact that in the interview with jimmy kimmel she was trying to make light of the conversation, but you could see her tearing up, and they were laughing. uh uh.

2020.09.29 14:43 Shop_Difficult Katherine Heigl

Ok so I see a lot of misconduct in this sub about Katherine Heigl and what happened and I am here to set the record straight. Ok about the Knocked Up movie I mean she wasn't wrong the movie was sexist, but people read way to much into that. In an interview she said 98% of the time she loved working there, but 2% she did not like what she was giving. And yes she came about it the wrong way, yes it was rude and petty but was she wrong? No. And the Grey's Anatomy thing, ok so I think we can all agree Izzie's storyline in season 4 sucked, like that was just bad writing. I mean she was a surgeon and was operating on deers? And she did not take her name of an Emmy award, but off of consideration. Sometimes actors agents put their names for awards and only 5 get chosen out of 100s of applicant I mean since she won one the year before, it wold make sense to put her name again. It was a small thing and she did not think anyone would notice, so when they did she just said the truth. And straightly after that she apologized profusely and tried to make amends. I think Katherine is just a very outspoken person with a big mouth.
And can we talk about how many male actors dissed their shows. Robert Pattinson dissed twilight on twitter, but he was "funny and relatable" Johnny Depp was accused of abusing his wife, but he got multi million dollar deals. ( i am not fully up to date with the Johnny Depp thing so sorry if the info is incorrect) And Robert Downey Jr. Like come on.
And the whole "hard to work with" " her co stars hate her" thing are lies. Justin Chambers himself talked about how much he loved her. He siad that she had a big mouth, but an even bigger heart. She was close to Kate Walsh. Ellen Pompeo, Sandra Oh, TR Knight, and Patrick Dempsey. When she was on Roswell Majandra Delfino one of her co stars called her, her best friend. She was also close to Adam Rodriguez.( he was on criminal minds, and was also in Roswell.) Even Seth Rogen talked about how great of a person she is. Judd Apatow also came to her defense. Patrick Wilson defended her. And she was even on Suits just last year and seemed to get along with the cast. She also was not fired her contract was all the way to season 7, but she had just adopted her daughter and wanted to spend some time withe her. So she ended her contract early. And the shooting she was never suppose t come back to die. I have no idea where people got that from.
In conclusion I think Katherine Just spoke her mind and people took it way out of proportion. And the cat litter commercials everyone seems to bring up is part of an organization she helps, which is where they help animals. She seems like a very good person who is just very vocal and outspoken.
Tell me what you think.

2020.08.24 09:39 plummyjellyfish Romantic movies that are FDS horror movies

I've been thinking about how much I dislike romantic movies, or movies with romantic elements, because they so often contain unfortunate portrayals of women, dating and sex. In fact, many of these so-called romantic or feminist movies I would actually consider outright horror movies, because they describe situations I'd do anything to escape. Spoilers for the movies below, of course.

Entrapment
Investigator Virginia Baker (played by the goddess Catherine Zeta-Jones) is investigating MacDougal, a professional thief. They play a game of cat and mouse with each other, as she pretends to be another thief in order to draw him into a major art heist. Throughout the narrative, Virginia is presented as a woman with some unresolved daddy issues.
Let me point out that Sean Connery is playing MacDougal, the male lead. Predictably, even though they could develop the relationship between the leads as an unexpected father-daughter one, in which Gin is mentored in thievery by the dad she never had, the screenwriters decide to make them a romantic couple. At the time of the movie, Sean Connery was 68 and Zeta-Jones had just turned 29! This horrendous age gap is one of the worst things I've ever seen, and I've seen footage of colonoscopies performed.

Passengers
Oh, boy. Jim Preston, a mechanical engineer enroute to Homestead II, is prematurely awoken from cryosleep by a ship malfunction. This is a problem, because the ship has 80 years to go until it reaches Homestead II and the ship's A.I, designers and crew (and writers of this piece of shit movie) are so dumb they haven't planned for this event. So Jim has no way of getting back to sleep and no way of contacting anyone for help.
He is facing a whole lifetime virtually alone on the ship. On the brink of committing suicide, he sees Aurora (like Sleeping Beauty, get it??) in her cryopod. He decides to sabotage said pod so that she will wake up and be a companion to him. He LIES to her about doing this and they eventually form a romantic connection. This is rape by fraud, my friends. At the end of the story, Aurora has the chance to go back to cryosleep but decides not to because she's got cockholm syndrome.

Knocked Up
A woman gets drunk and has a one-night-stand with a slovenly man. She gets pregnant, and decides to keep the kid. Throughout her pregnancy, the male lead fucks up everything and anything. He is painted as the lovable protagonist while the female lead is portrayed as a horrible, high-maintenance bitch. Her behaviour is amplified via the supporting leads, a married couple in which the woman is totally humorless and the man is a long-suffering free spirit. The lead actress, Katherine Heigl commented on the horrible portrayals of women in this movie:
“It paints the women as shrews, as humorless and uptight, and it paints the men as lovable, goofy, fun-loving guys. It exaggerated the characters, and I had a hard time with it, on some days. I’m playing such a bitch; why is she being such a killjoy? Why is this how you’re portraying women? Ninety-eight percent of the time it was an amazing experience, but it was hard for me to love the movie.”
Predictably, people (men) got pissy about these comments and Heigl's career circled the toilet not unlike Megan Fox's did when she called Michael Bay a nazi. (Personally, Megan Fox can call Bay whatever she wants, his movies suck and he introduces all of his female characters ass or titties first.)

50 First Dates
A woman with an incurable form of amnesia is wooed every day by Adam Sandler. If this fate wasn't horrible enough, the movie has a truly sinister ending. Drew Barrymore's female lead wakes up to find a recording by her now-husband explaining who he is and how they have spent their lives together, falling in love every day. Apparently, they now have children. Now, the movie plays this as a romance but let's think about it.
Imagine waking up pregnant with no memory of how you got that way. Would you be too happy about that? Imagine waking up, thinking that it was a day like any other, and then suddenly enduring the pain of childbirth? This guy has totally taken advantage of a woman with literal severe brain damage. I can't imagine what compels a man to want to marry a woman who can't form new memories, but it's probably nothing good. In fact, 50 First Dates reminds me of another shitty movie/book called 'Before I Go to Sleep' which has a similar premise but at least plays the sexual and psychological coercion for horror.

Bridget Jones' Diary
Bridget Jones has good friends, a cute flat and a nice job. Unfortunately, she's also a rampant pickmeisha which means if you watch this movie, you'll have to endure 1.5 hours of seeing a woman bumble around without a shred of dignity. This character was originally hailed as some sort of feminist answer to the shitty romcoms of the past, but, crucially, the character is obsessed with finding love. She seems to think that being single (and over 30, OMG) is the worst thing EVAR and reeks of desperation. Here's a tip, honey, men can smell desperate, and that's not a good stink to have.
Later in the movie she finds love with Colin Firth, although he pulls LVM stunt on her at the very end by walking out of her apartment without a word and forcing her to run through the snow in her panties and slippers. He then turns around and tells her he just left to buy her a new diary - couldn't he have told her that without making a scene? She kisses him, music plays, this movie is shite. This story is a modern rehashing of Pride and Prejudice, except Lizzy Bennett is a true Queen, while Bridget is a pickmeisha pretender to the throne. If you want a modern version of Pride and Prejudice, look no further than ultra-corny guilty pleasure Bride and Prejudice which features catchy (and sometimes hysterical) Bollywood dance numbers and gorgeous leads Aishwarya Rai and Martin Henderson (repping hard for us Kiwis, yeah boii).
I'm sure I can think of more examples, but this is the cream of the crap (off the top of my head). What are your FDS horror movies?

2020.04.03 20:12 Ex__ Quarantainment Suggestion: Movies that take place in Los Angeles

EDIT: If something is missing, check the edits first.
Hello all! I don't know about the rest of this town, but I sure do enjoy movies. In this post I'm going to share a list of movies that:
A.) Are watchable, possibly even entertaining.
B.) Take place in Los Angeles. Some may simply have just a scene or two in Los Angeles whereas others are fully written for a Los Angeles setting. Some may even be fictional locations that were neverless filmed in and highly resemble the Los Angeles area.
Most of these are mainstream movies so no real gems in this list, but I encourage others to contribute in the comments. I realize that not everyone has watched everything, so I'll provide insight that assumes you haven't seen the film yet.

Movies that take place in a non-fictional Los Angeles setting

Movies that partially take place in Los Angeles

Movies that take place in a fictionalized Los Angeles

Thats it for my list. Don't feel like proofreading it, so I apologize for any grammatical errors. Be aware that I can't think of or remember EVERYTHING. Also this isn't meant to be an encyclopedic list, so there are some films I left off intentionalyl ebcause I didn't feel they were what I considered watchable. That being said, I'll edit in any film that's commented below, but don't blame me if you watch it and it sucks ass.
EDIT:
Swimming With Sharks (1994) - Another one I forgot. Stars 90s Kevin Spacey and Brett from Pulp Fiction. Decent watch, if not a bit over the top with the ending.
Up in Smoke (1978) - The original stoner comedy. Stars the comedy duo Cheech and Chong. Excellent watch and they do a good performance of Earache My Eye. In fact, the entire soundtrack is dope. Definitely worth a watch.
Car Wash (1976) - Solid comedy, stars Richard Pryor, and spawned the song of the same titled that charted heavily in the 70s. Had a really stupid remake that I think Aftermath records produced named The Wash that is not at all worth mentioning further.
Set It Off (1996) - A bank heist film on the surface, but really the black woman's answer to Thelma and Louise. Stars Jada Pinkett-Smith, Vivica A. Fox, and Queen Latifah as a lesbian waaaaaaay before she officially came out.
u/Cribbit has further decreed that Bosch (Amazon Prime) and Barry (HBO) are further required watching for continued Los Angeles residency.
u/SoCaLABoy - L.A. Story (1991

2019.10.16 15:47 terpsichore17 NSV: doing my own hauskeeping!

Y’all, I’m feeling like Katherine Heigl this morning.
I took my Sentimental Boggy Feelings and stowed them long enough to take each of these dresses off the hanger, put it on my body, snap a shot, show my roommate, and finally bid the damned things farewell.
Part of me wonders "Why did you keep all of these in your closet so long?" It's not like I ever told myself that I could wear them again. It's not like those 7 friends would be any less married if I didn't have the dress involved (especially considering that wedding 4 had a rented dress). In the case of my chamber choir dresses, it's not like I was really champing at the bit to wear floor-length black polyester all over town.
I think I needed the closure of sizing down. Every time I was asked to be a bridesmaid, it started another cycle of tracking calories, dusting off the treadmill, checking the scale (with no appreciation for how ovulation affected my weigh-ins), and, dispirited, ordering another $100+ dress that was a size bigger.
These dresses weren’t particularly appealing, but they (the smaller ones) were still my Goal Clothing for months, since each one came from a particular year and particular weight. My original keto Google doc – which has my measurements, helpful links, my goals, my victories (and the date I reached them), my BMI calculations, my list of non-food rewards – has a section for my Last Goal Clothing Attempt.
Every single one of them has fit for at least a year. Some of them have been laughably large for a year, and I just didn’t recognize that until I tried to put them on.
I wish I’d known about keto before I had to buy and wear them all. I wish I could spare myself those years of vain efforts. But now I know, and can use that going forward.
Time to say goodbye to the past, and hello to a foot or two of closet space!

2018.07.20 02:00 Sojourney1 A few pragmatic questions (sorry, it's a long one)

First, a little background: I posted these questions on Susan's, but honestly I disliked how heavily moderated and cencored those forums are. I received no practical answers. Also, please do not offer your alternative solutions. ☺️ I'm wondering if anyone has discovered practical solutions.
  1. Is there a fool-proof, or nearly fool-proof, way to determine if you pass without outing yourself? I know the old tampon cliché, but that's never happened to me and I know I pass at least some of the time. I know this because I've outed myself to some people (either due to circumstances or I just felt comfortable with them), and they have been genuinely and visibly surprised.
  2. When stealth-dating, does anyone know a way to gauge how open to dating a trans woman a potential partner may be? Or, at the very least, how safe they are? (Meaning, the date won't end somewhere between me on my couch watching a sappy Katherine Heigl movie, eating ice cream, and/or needing an ice pack TO a trip to the ER).
These questions have been bothering me lately because my transition timeline v. social experiences have been weird: Nov 15: Bagan HRT Apr 16: Out of the closet Jun 16: FT (Misgendered 2 or 3 times) Sep 17: moved to LA Oct 17: started job as valet Nov 17: ceased HRT in an attempt to store sperm (Misgendered nearly weekly-->daily) May 18: produced and stored sperm; restarted HRT. Jul 18: orchi; still being consistently misgendered.
I'm not sure if it's the hormones or the fact that there are so many queer people in LA. I hope it's the hormones and my body feminizes again soon. 😧

2017.10.21 14:15 Georgehef Just Marathoned the Entire Child's Play Franchise!

Took me a little longer to get to it, but I'm back with another horror franchise marathon! I hadn't seen any of these, so I was pretty excited to see what was so special about Chucky. Here are my thoughts!

Child’s Play

There is some very snappy dialogue in this. Andy is kind of whiney, but honestly, so was I at that age, so I guess it’s just good acting. Chucky himself is fun as well, with Brad Dourif seeming to delight in his evil. He’s good at that cough Grima Wormtongue cough.
There’s a lot of little things I like about this movie. They constantly hint that Chucky is indeed alive, but you don’t see him break character until 45 minutes in, and when he does, it’s hilarious. They also explain why Chucky knew the spell, when I fully when expected it to just be a “plot driving thing he knows TM”. There’s also some fun kills like the voodoo doll kill, but to me, the scariest part of these movies is always the dismissal by authority figures. Nobody believes anyone, and I can’t imagine how awful that is.
This is a good movie!

Child’s Play 2

This is how you bring back a bad guy. It’s a goofy resurrection, but Child’s Play 2 gets away with it because it was sufficiently goofy.
While not everyone returns (“she’s undergoing psychiatric evaluation” seemed to be a pretty obvious way of saying “We didn’t want to pay for Andy’s mom to come back”), there’s some fun new characters like Andy’s foster sister Kyle and Andy’s teacher who essentially drops a “snitches get stiches” on him.
Child’s Play 2 isn’t short on intensity though. They smartly trade in established goodwill from the first movie to keep us on edge from the beginning. We know Chucky is alive, and we’re waiting for him to talk. We don’t need another 45-minute wait to see if Andy is nuts.
Don Mancini hits you with spooky scenes like a suffocation that goes on for a long time, a tense basement search, and more. There’s also fun kills, with my personal favorite being the photocopier. Chucky is a funny guy, with plenty of one-liners, and at one point he rips off his own hand and replaces it with a knife, so that’s neat.
I didn’t have anywhere else to put this, but there’s also a better melting scene than Jason Takes Manhattan, and there’s an exploding head that reminds me of Robocop acid guy.
This is excellent, but only if you’ve seen the original. Not really a franchise you can just “jump in anywhere”.

Child’s Play 3

I love a good opening credits scene, and Child’s Play 3 delivers, with Chucky getting melted down and then reforged in plastic.
The acting is again quite good, with top honors going to Perrey Reeves who played Kristen De Silva, and Travis Fine, who REALLY sinks his teeth into the “shithead drill sergeant” role of Lt. Colonel Brett Shelton.
Chucky really revels in his movie monster-ness by Child’s Play 3, and he seems very aware of how crazy this all is. That said, I do like that Chucky’s reasoning for why he can stop trying to possess Andy makes sense. The benefit of a consistent writer!
Chucky gets more cool kills, like the dumpster kill and even the CEO at the beginning, but I actually laughed out loud at the Colonel stealing his kill by having a heart attack. Chucky also sets up a handful of very tense scenes by tampering with paintball rifles, and there’s also plenty of cool effects, particularly on Chucky himself, which have become fairly par-for-the-course in this series now.
The faihouse of horror at the end deserves rebuke for several unsafe practices though. Tsk tsk.

Bride of Chucky

Neat homage to all the other movie killers with a bunch of iconography at the beginning… Jason and Michael’s masks, and Freddy’s glove. There’s also a pinhead reference later on, and maybe even more that I missed. Add in a good theme song by Rob Zombie means a this is yet another solid opening for this franchise.
Jennifer Tilly is introduced to the series (reading Voodoo for dummies, which didn’t quite get a laugh, but it did get a nose exhalation) in this movie as Tiffany, and she is GREAT. Sexy, but very creepy. Kind of a black widow vibe. She also has delightful banter with Chucky, a weird doll sex scene years before Team America, and overall just brings her doll to life. Pun intended.
The rest of the cast falls between acceptable and good. Katherine Heigl is in this, and she’s not bad, just kind of… meh. John Ritter is pretty good playing against type, and of course, Brad Dourif is doing his thing. Overall, it’s a pretty decent ensemble who bring together a very funny script, and there’s a few good kills in there too (especially the honeymoon kill). It’s not scary, but it’s a good movie.

Seed of Chucky

The first movie to miss the mark with the opening credits, where we follow some doll sperm. There’s a nice Psycho homage in the opening dream, but it’s not quite enough to redeem it.
There’s more Jennifer Tilly being funny, John Waters, weirdly detailed doll boobs… but not a lot of fun kills, which is what we came for.
I don’t want to give the impression I didn’t like this movie. I did. Redman is hilarious, “It’s a voodoo pregnancy, it’s accelerated” is a funny way of saying “don’t think too hard about how this works”, and it’s very progressive. But I just didn’t really connect with Glen(da). This doll is voiced by a fool of a Took, but they’re very passive, and I just never was particularly interested.
Couple things I DO want to give a shout out to are Jennifer Tilly’s driver having a full character arc with like… 10 lines, a great subversion of the Shining reference, and weirdly effective gore when it came to the dolls. Particularly that guy opening Tiff’s back and Glen(da) cutting up Chucky.
Overall this is the weakest, but it’s still worth watching.

Curse of Chucky

We’re back to actual horror movies instead of horror comedy, which I can appreciate. I was delighted to see after lacking a bunch of cool kills in Seed, Curse has them in spades. There’s a great spinning shot of a dinner table where one dish is poisoned, someone gets their jaw knocked off, and more. Worse than those though is WASPy Barb’s fear that she “might have to send (her daughter) to public school”.
The character of Barb is such a bitch in this and I love it. This is the right kind of “asshole” character, where you still kind of like them, unlike the antagonist girl in F13 VII and Trent or Chad or Devin or whatever his name was in the F13 reboot. But I digress.
I have to say though, something seemed off about Chucky’s design to me. I don’t know if it’s new animatronics, or just the budget showing, or what, but it just didn’t look quite as good as usual to me. That said, his return to an unblemished face leads to a cool scene later, so that works.
The budget also appears when they hilariously use an “internet search” brand search engine. It’s 2004, you couldn’t spring for at least askjeeves?
Budget can’t affect that writing though. Everything in this movie sets something up later or moves story/characters forward. Don is also at it again with great trope subversions, in particular the “dad is lusting after the nanny” cliché. The quality difference between some of the later, direct-to-video Hellraisers and this was remarkable. Here I am, remarking on it.
Conversely for writing, I didn’t love the flashback about Nica’s mom… honestly, this movie could have worked as just “hey, Chucky is insane and now he’s killing these people”. I guess it works to keep the universe small, and I don’t begrudge people who DO like it, but not everything needs to be connected in my opinion. There’s also a neat stinger after the credits. Won’t spoil it, but worth sticking around for.

Cult of Chucky

Poor Andy. Google would really fuck up his dating. Guess the relationship with De Silva from 3 didn’t work out? I am glad however that they kept Nica even as they brought back in Andy, and they put the movie in an interesting setting.
Cult of Chucky definitely kept me gripped; There’s a lot of cool imagery, like “not so fast” written in blood, a neat glass falling death that seemed to be an homage to the previously mentioned honeymoon kill in Bride, and an arm shoved through someone’s face.
While it is definitely still more horror than comedy, flashes of that comedy do shine through… especially when they ask “Mrs. Valentine” if anyone has ever told her she looks just like Jennifer Tilly.
As far as acting, I thought it was very solid. Special props go to Michael Therriault who does a great job playing the kindly therapist, only to uh… betray that role later on.
One thing I want to be sure I mention is my appreciation for their commitment to the violence. I’m so used to the MPAA censoring the kills in movies like F13 that when they show a death in this, I kept expecting them to cut away. Nope. You see every gory detail of that kicked in face, or the glass slicing someone’s neck, etc. This is an adult’s movie, and we’re adults, so let us see what we signed up to see damn it!
This movie does so much right. I like the kills, and I like Andy, and I like Nica, but unfortunately the one thing I don’t really like… is the idea. Several versions of Chucky/him spreading takes away from the specialness in my opinion. This knocked it down a bit for me, but I did like the bleak ending, and I’m definitely looking forward to the next one.

FINAL ORDER: 2, 1, Bride (on Jennifer Tilly’s back), Cult, 3, Curse, Seed…

but they’re honestly all relatively similar levels of quality and I enjoyed them all.
Don Mancini is clearly the lynchpin of this franchise, and without him guiding with his writing/sometimes directing, I can see this easily becoming awful schlock. As is, there’s an awesome consistency to it that I greatly respect. Also, I think I might be in love with Jennifer Tilly, so feel free to hit me up, Jen.
I I can get in one more franchise before Halloween, so if you want to see another Horror Series review, make sure you leave a suggestion. Also, let me know what your ranking for Child's Play is!
Thanks for humoring me this October, everyone!

2017.10.21 14:15 Georgehef Just Marathoned the Entire Child's Play Series!

2017.08.16 02:22 MattelJones Favorite films set (mostly) on a moving train?

There's something about movies set on trains that just appeals to me. You get some interesting character interaction, potentially exciting or interesting visuals and there's room for all kinds of stories, although thrillers seem to work best.
Here's a short list of a few favorites to start things off:
Night Train to Munich
A very compact and entertaining WWII spy thriller featuring a very young Rex Harrison as a dashing British Officer in the Intelligence branch who goes on a seemingly impossible rescue mission behind enemy lines. He co-stars with Margaret Lockwood and Paul Henreid. This was directed by Carol Reed (The Third Man). If you enjoy WHERE EAGLES DARE you'll like this early in WWII era British effort which includes a lot of practical model work (sets, trains, bg etc.). A sort of companion piece to Hitchcock's. The Lady Vanishes.
Horror Express
One of the non-Hammer film team-ups of Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee as rival researchers traveling on the Trans Siberian Express with the still animated remains of an ancient alien evil. Telly Savalas show up a bit into it as a local military official, and there's a Rasputin style mystic on board who wants to bond with the monster. This has some tense moments livened up by the droll humor of the Lee and Cushing exchanges. This film is ripe for a remake.
Runaway Train
From the man who gave you Tango & Cash (Andrey Konchalovskiy) this prison break cum train film is based on an original screenplay by Akira Kurosawa and features a super raw performance by Jon Voight as a bad ass lifer who breaks out of an Alaskan prison along with young Eric Roberts and gets stuck (along with rail worker Rebecca De Mornay) on the title vehicle. If you liked Jon Voight in Ray Donovan you'll enjoy this. Great ending.
Under Siege 2 : Dark Territory
Did anyone ever really top the original Die Hard with one of these lone man against many action films? Whatever Steven Segal lacks in the charisma department (as compared with young Bruce Willis) he more than makes up for in the cooly confident bad ass area. With Eric Bogosian as the villain taking control of a secret US space based weapon that generates earthquakes, and Everett McGill as his main merc bad guy (who seems to secretly be a real Casey Ryback fanboy). This has one of the greatest/dumbest hero trying to outrun destruction scene ever put on film. This is also know as Katherine Heigl's best movie to date.
So any recommendations?

MOVIE GUIDE
BEAUTY AND THE BEAST - Bill Condon (Dreamgirls) directed this live-action retelling of the Disney animated classic from 1991. As before, this fairy tale centers on a young woman named Belle (Emma Watson), who is forced to live in an enchanted castle with a prince who is cursed to look like a hideous Beast (Dan Stevens). In time, the pair fall in love as Belle learns to see the good man hiding behind the Beast's monstrous exterior.
BORN IN CHINA - This documentary from Disneynature follows three animal species in the wilds of China: A snow leopard tries to protect her two cubs from predators, a golden snub-nosed monkey squabbles with his family, and a panda mother cares for her child.
THE BOSS BABY - The Boss Baby is a hilariously universal story about how a new baby's arrival impacts a family, told from the point of view of a delightfully unreliable narrator, a wildly imaginative 7 year old named Tim.
THE CIRCLE - As Mae rises through the ranks of the world’s largest tech & social media company, she is encouraged by the company’s founder to engage in a groundbreaking experiment that pushes the boundaries of privacy, ethics and ultimately her personal freedom.
COLOSSAL - Anne Hathaway stars as Gloria, an unemployed New York City resident who, out of desperation, relocates to her hometown. She quickly lands a job with an old classmate (Jason Sudeikis). Each night, she drinks herself to sleep, and each morning, she wakes up to the same terrible news story: a giant, monstrous creature is wreaking havoc in Seoul, South Korea. Gloria soon makes a startling discovery about the monster. And that's just the start of this riveting, shapeshifting film.
THE FATE OF THE FURIOUS - In the eighth installment of the Fast and the Furious series, Dominic Toretto's crew are rocked to their core when they must face their most dangerous adversary yet: Dom himself (Vin Diesel), who is now working with a shadowy cyber-terrorist known only as Cipher (Charlize Theron). As DSS agent Luke Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) and the rest of the team attempt to fight back, they find themselves in an alliance with their old enemy, assassin Deckard Shaw.
FREE FIRE - Brie Larson, Armie Hammer and Cillian Murphy star in this taut, wildly entertaining chamber piece. Set in Boston during the 1970s, the film unfolds in an abandoned warehouse, where a mysterious businesswoman (Larson) and her wise-cracking associate (Hammer) have arranged a black-market weapons deal between an IRA arms buyer (Murphy) and a South African gun runner (Sharlto Copley). Suffice to say things don't go as planned.
GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY: VOL 2 - Peter Quill and his fellow Guardians are hired by a powerful alien race, the Sovereign, to protect their precious batteries from invaders. When it is discovered that Rocket has stolen the items they were sent to guard, the Sovereign dispatch their armada to search for vengeance. As the Guardians try to escape, the mystery of Peter's parentage is revealed.
KONG: SKULL ISLAND - A secret government organization mounts an expedition to Skull Island, an uncharted territory in the Pacific. Led by an explorer (John Goodman) and a lieutenant colonel (Samuel L. Jackson), the group recruit a disillusioned soldier (Tom Hiddleston) and a photojournalist (Brie Larson) to investigate the island's peculiar seismic activity. But once there, they discover that Skull Island is home to a gigantic ape called King Kong, and find themselves caught up in an ongoing war between the beast and the area's indigenous predators.
THE LOST CITY OF Z - A journey into the Amazon results in a stunning discovery and a mysterious disappearance in The Lost City of Z, an epic about real-life explorer Percy Fawcett. At the dawn of the 20th century, Fawcett (Charlie Hunnam) encountered evidence of a previously unknown civilization. His bigoted scientific peers dismiss the claims, but alongside his wife (Sienna Miller), son (Tom Holland) and aide-de-camp (Robert Pattinson), Fawcett returns to investigate.
PHOENIX FORGOTTEN - A young woman investigates the disappearance of her brother and his two companions in the Arizona desert. Her quest for answers leads her down a strange path that suggests the “Phoenix Lights” are somehow directly related to her missing sibling.
THE PROMISE - When Michael, a brilliant medical student, meets Ana, their shared Armenian heritage sparks an attraction that explodes into a romantic rivalry between Michael and Ana’s boyfriend Chris, a photojournalist dedicated to exposing political truth.
RISK - You might remember Laura Poitras as the artist/journalist who broke the Edward Snowden-NSA story, first in a series of Pulitzer Prize-winning articles and then in an Oscar-winning film called Citizenfour. When Snowden contacted Poitras about blowing the whistle, she was already several years into another top secret documentary: a film intimately following Julian Assange, Sarah Harrison and the rest of the scrappy team at WikiLeaks. Shot over six years, Risk is startlingly up-close and bracingly candid as it studies Assange, his colleagues and Poitras' shifting relationship with the controversial organization.
UNFORGETTABLE - In this woman-centric thriller, a jilted ex-wife (Katherine Heigl) makes life hell for her former husband's new bride (Rosario Dawson) and tries to manipulate her behavior to ultimately come out of top.

2017.04.22 23:26 rjonreview19 IJW: Unforgettable (2017)

For a directorial debut after decades of producing films such as Heathers, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Ramona & Beezus, several Nicholas Sparks productions, If I Stay, (you can see the shift of career choices just by film titles) Denise Di Novi does a fine job controlling her actors and having them deliver fine performances. I’m not going to lie, I thoroughly enjoyed Katherine Heigl in this. This is honestly the first time I liked her performance in a movie since Knocked Up. Di Novi actually lets Heigl shine in ways you never thought she would. I’m not saying her performance was great, but it is passable.
What’s the deal with Warner Bros. trying to steal Sony’s thunder? Last month they attempted to do that with CHiPs in an attempt to cash in on the success of Sony’s 21 Jump Street and now we have Unforgettable which is NOTHING BUT A CASH IN ON SONY’S OBSESSED! FOR SHIT SAKE THE TIME OF THE RELEASE DATE BARELY EVEN DIFFERS!
Obsessed Release Date: April 24th, 2009
Unforgettable Release Date: April 21st, 2017
For God’s sake, Sony ripped off their own film nearly every year in the month of September with no but black actors. But Warner Bros? This is a new low for you guys to distribute this.
Every stupid action each character makes just adds on to the list of stupidity. It really makes sense since this from two screenwriters who written work visibly differs. One one hand, you have David Leslie Johnson whose work included Orphan, The Conjuring 2, and several episodes of the Walking Dead (don’t worry he wrote some shit too including Red Riding Hood and Wrath of the Titans). Then, on the other hand, you have Christina Hodson whose work includes….Shut In. YEAH! THE #2 MOVIE THAT WAS ON MY WORST OF LIST OF 2016 who is somehow currently writing the untitled Bumblebee spin-off movie!

2016.06.28 02:00 jwomack1984 Help - What Would You Do?

I'll try to keep this short as I can. I'm at a point in my life where I could use some help.
I'm 32 and I quit drinking when I was 19. Reason being is a waitress I worked with at a Country Club was killed by a drunk driver.
I worked as the Caddie Master at the time and pretty much ignored all of the waitresses at the time. The one that was killed was a 10, think of Katherine Heigl with an athletic body and way hotter.
About a month before she died, she came out and wanted to play golf with me on a day the club was closed (employees can play on days off). This was the first time in over a year that I had actually talked to her. We hooked up that night.
After the accident I found out that she was pregnant and had a fiance.
I don't use this as a crutch to feel sorry for myself, I use it to motivate myself to become better each and every day.
What's becoming an increasing problem is when I try to meet someone new to date. When I don't give them a reason why I don't drink they get suspicious. I've only told one girl why and it was the last one I tried dating. She got freaked out in the long run of things.
Am I ever going to be able to get in a relationship with someone? There are emotionally healthy women out there, but I feel no one is ever feel comfortable with what happened in the past and the decisions I've made because of it.

2016.05.06 20:42 studentactressfriend UPDATE: Should I [24F] drop out of my friend's [26M] student film because his lead actor [25M] makes me REALLY uncomfortable?

Thank you everybody for your advice in my original post (seen here):
https://www.reddit.com/relationships/comments/4i0jy9/should_i_24f_drop_out_of_my_friends_26m_student/
TL;DR of that post: I was asked by a good friend to be a part of his student film thesis project, but found out to my horror that he'd hired a creepy guy to be my co-star. I didn't know if I should drop out of the film or force my friend to choose between the two of us.
I know I seemed like a doormat for asking what to do, but I really didn't want to screw my friend over and also didn't know if putting up with unpleasant co-actors was just a part of being a "professional." (I keep seeing stories about Katherine Heigl being horrible to work with on-set and never getting along with other actors and that's why everybody hates her, haha.) Thank you to everyone who told me to talk to Tom and share my concerns. I agree that he should have tested the leads before casting them, but to be fair to him everyone's schedules have been crazy this semester and I was out of town last week, so I think that's why he just went ahead and "hired" Brad.
Anyway, after my post I decided to meet Tom for dinner. He asked me how I've been and I kind of clumsily launched into a story about this shitty date I had with this guy (Brad, without saying it was Brad). Tom was really sympathetic and was saying things like, "Holy shit dude, that guy's a creep! I'm glad nothing happened to you, what an asshole, I'm glad you're safe, I feel like I'd fight him or something if I could." I felt kind of sneaky about doing it this way but people's suggestions to lead off with the story without saying the name seemed effective. At that point I told Tom that the person I was actually talking about was Brad, and that when I found out, I felt really awkward and wasn't sure how to tell Tom, but I hoped he could see why I wouldn't want to work with that guy. I said I really wanted to be a part of Tom's project, but I didn't know what to do and wanted him to have all the facts. I said I'd go along with any decision he made.
It kind of blew his mind that I was really talking about Brad and he took a little while to process it. I asked him how he knew Brad and he said that he was just a classmate that he'd worked on a project with earlier this year, they weren't amazing friends or anything. He seemed to brood over the info for a while and I didn't really know what to say, so we just ate in silence for a bit. Finally Tom said matter-of-factly, "Okay, thanks for telling me. Do you know of anybody we can replace him with?"
I was surprised, and he was surprised I was surprised! He said, "That guy's a dick, I'm not going to work with him if he treated you that way! We'll find someone else." I was so happy and grateful that I started tearing up a bit. It's not THAT important to me to work on Tom's film but it was just so nice to hear that he had my back with no reservations or hesitation. He was kind of bemused that I thought he would want to keep Brad over me, haha.
So, as of this morning, Tom has informed Brad that he's no longer on the project and he's talking to a few different people he knows as replacements (we are going to do "auditions" to see who has good chemistry, as others have suggested). He's stressed out about finding somebody but he said it's good that I told him now and not after we started shooting, so thank you again to everyone for telling me to tell him ASAP.
I'm not sure how I feel about how Tom did it? (The "firing," I mean.) He just texted Brad and said something like, "Sorry, but this isn't going to work out, we don't need you for the role anymore." I'm not sure if Brad should have been informed of the reason why we didn't want to work with him (I almost feel like he should know he's a creep and that his behavior has consequences) but Tom said he was worried that Brad would blame me and that he didn't need an explanation for being "let go." I see his point, and he's director, so... it doesn't really matter, since Brad is now gone! Yay!
I've blocked Brad's number and his Facebook because I feel like he would try to contact me after this. I know he kind of went "what the fuck, bro?" and asked Tom something about me, but Tom didn't answer and he didn't really specifically say how Brad reacted when he got fired - he literally said, "eh... don't worry about it" to me when I asked. I did notice that Brad looked at my LinkedIn sometime today, but... that's about it.
Thanks again everyone for your advice. I'm over the moon at how this turned out and I'm looking forward to filming this summer!
tl;dr: Bye creepy Brad, hello new co-star and great friend Tom.

2016.04.24 02:08 arcterex117 Have Jews Failed in the Same Way we Have

When I say failed, obviously that is not across the board. We've succeeded in many ways- f*ck MM myth, we are a model minority. And when I say Jews I'm not talking about the very powerful, wealthy Jews who have massive power in finance, media. I'm talking about average Jews who have always been separate from the Jewish kingpins- often enduring the brunt of the latter's excesses.
The average Jew is wealthy like many Asians. However, he is viewed as nebbish- a timid nerd. There are many jokes about Jews and sports. When I think of a Jew, I don't think of someone who spends time in the gym. They seem to have an out-dating, out-marriage problem just like us to the extent that Jewish organization have tried to persuade Jews not to marry non-Jews.
Again none of this impacts the powerful Jews but it does affect everyday Jews. Their intermarriage rate is 58%. Growing up I saw many if not most Jewish girls chasing Aryan guys. At this rate they will lose their identity in America in a few generations. Their power will not dissipate because it refers to a few at the top who marry their own. But I'm talking about their general population.
And now more Jewish women marry out than Jewish men. Similar to Asians.
“Before 1970, men were heavily leading women in intermarriage,” said Steven M. Cohen, a leading sociologist of the Jewish community and a professor at the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, who analyzed the data for the Forward. “[That] is no longer the case.” According to Cohen, three times as many Jewish men intermarried before 1970 as women. But between 2000 and 2013, slightly more Jewish women intermarried than men.
The problem is not as bad as the one we face, but the trendline is not good. Whites complain about "white genocide" by immigrants and white women marrying out but minority populations are diluting their genes at a much faster rate.
Jewish men and women who marry out are less likely to raise their kids as Jewish. (although I should say the bigger problem is the racial dilution; Jews are primarily a race- and genetic analysis has shown their unique profile)
As for Cohen’s finding that intermarried Jewish women and men are both unlikely to raise their children as Jewish, Bayme said that the implications for Jewish communal policy are “very clear.” “We cannot afford to give up on endogamy, on encouraging Jews to marry other Jews,” Bayme said.
You can see in this image how Jewish out-marriage was 17% before 1970 and ~58% today: http://cdn.theatlantic.com/assets/media/img/posts/2013/11/Screen_Shot_2013_11_06_at_6.03.25_PM/bf82aafff.png
Jews generally are losing their identity in America:
The proportion of Jews who say they have no religion and are Jewish only on the basis of ancestry, ethnicity or culture is growing rapidly, and two-thirds of them are not raising their children Jewish at all.
http://www.jta.org/2013/10/01/news-opinion/united-states/pew-survey-u-s-jewish-intermarriage-rate-rises-to-58-percent
Jews are fighting to prevent out-marriage:
Convincing Millennials to 'Marry a Nice Jewish Boy'
(they do mention JDate- and I think if Asians had a popular version of this- that could be very helpful)
Intermarriage: Can Anything Be Done?
The battle is over; or so we’re told. A half-century after the rate of intermarriage in the US began to skyrocket, the Jewish community appears to have resigned itself to the inevitable. But to declare defeat is preposterous.
When people think of Jews, they often think of people like Woody Allen or Larry David - nerdy, often awkward types. http://www.tabletmag.com/jewish-arts-and-culture/90124/helpless
Still, all varietals of Nebbish have a few noxious traits in common: fear, helplessness, and overwhelming Jewishness....Which is weird, because in the first half of the 20th century, Jewish men were depicted in popular culture as plucky young strivers eager to leave behind the stultifying Old World for the sexy and welcoming embrace of the New..
http://www.tabletmag.com/jewish-arts-and-culture/90124/helpless
(it's interesting that they mention that the Holocaust may have changed the perception of Jewish men and masculinity- "I know this is just a New Yorker cartoon, but on behalf of Jewish womanhood, I feel it is incumbent on me to ask: How the hell did this happen? And why?...It’s almost too obvious to mention, but to make sense of the shift in Jewish masculine identity from its prewar to postwar incarnations, we’ve got to look at what happened in the interim. I’ll give you a hint: It’s depressing, it’s German, and it rhymes with “the Schmolocaust.”)
This article talks about how Jews and Asians are both stereotyped by the dominant local population as nerds. One interesting thing that's shared in common is that the local Aryan population has a different idea of masculinity than Jews and Asians do.
The Berkeley professor Daniel Boyarin has argued that the rabbinical culture that developed in the Roman Empire involved a version of manhood at odds with the dominant Roman one. The Roman gender constructs associated masculinity with reception, whereas one rabbinical masculine ideal was a man who read the Talmud and understood it
Despite all the progress Jews have made in America (and the power certain Jews have), they continue to have brand image problems. Which makes me think, we can keep fighting and making progress but one cannot win all the image battles overnight. Jews prop up people like David Schimmer who has prototypical Jewish features- and show him dating the hottest girl on Friends. Similarly, they have Seth Rogen in movies bedding impossibly hot women like Katherine Heigl.
They are doing something about it. With Hillel - a college group that encourages Jewish community on campus; with the idea that if you reinforce Jewish friendships across gender, and social groups, you are more likely to date and marry someone who's Jewish. With Birthright, where Jews go to Israel and get in touch with their identity. With JDate an online dating site for Jews.
JDate is the primary dating service for Jews (and gentiles who are particularly interested in marrying Jewish people, for that matter). According to data provided by the company, they are responsible for more Jewish marriages than all other online dating services combined, and 5 out of every 9 Jews who have gotten married since 2008 tried finding their match on the Internet.
So they are actively fighting their racial/religious disintegration. They've made strides and will continue to do so. So should we.
Food for thought.

2016.01.13 01:45 Xemnas81 Why does nearly every informal publication on the affirmative action blame men and paint women as victims? Have even the lad mags become white knights? [VICE article]

Seriously I'm getting pissed off.
First Buzzfeed posts these #wastehistime gifs like it's fun
http://www.buzzfeed.com/michaelblackmon/ghosting-never-felt-so-good#.ja5LrJMePJ
'Ghosting never felt so good?' What the fuck?
Then Lad Bible stuck up an article on Facebook, full of white knights and feminists who somehow thought it was open invitation to go around Nice Guy-shaming (when wastehistime is clearly, above and beyond 'friend zone' into manipulative bitch territory)
This owning I found this…from VICE. I thought this place was supposed to be the US version of lad mags? Isn't this Chadtopia? What the fuck happened?
edit: Bad judgment call. Vice is a SJW hub for collegiates. My bad. Well, I've posted now. This could be interesting!
Let's look. I'm tearing this article apart word by word, without pre tense, because I'm getting angry.
Opens with a (strong independent) Women are Wonderful
We all have that friend: the beautiful, intelligent, driven woman who—like Katherine Heigl in every rom-com—can't find a decent date. Every guy she goes out with is an asshole; she consistently dates "below" her league, and she's on the verge of giving up on a committed relationship altogether.
Yes Your Majesty.
Not long after he turned 30, the writer Jon Birger realized he and his wife knew a lot of women like that. The couple didn't have a lot of single male friends left, but the many single women they knew all seemed to be buyers stuck in a seller's market. One of those friends, Birger told me, "had been dating a guy for a couple years. It certainly seemed like they were well on their way to getting married.
She was in her late 30s, he was in his mid 40s. She really wants to have kids, get married, the whole [thing]. And she's amazing in every way."
One day at lunch, Birger casually asked her about her boyfriend. "Her whole expression changed," Birger recalled. They had just broken up. "They'd been dating for over two years and he said he 'just wasn't ready to settle down.'"
This got Birger, a former economics writer for Fortune and Money, thinking: How could a man of that age be so cavalier about casting aside such an amazing woman? And why do we all have similar stories of incredible female friends trapped for years in dating hell? Why are there so many great single women? Where are all the great single men?
tl;dr a white knight pacifies his angry friend by writing a book for her on where all the good men have gone
[Date-o-nomics is] a clever read with a sobering conclusion: There simply aren't enough college-educated men to go around.
Our guest on Vice today, Date-o-nomics author Jon Birger himself, starts with the assumption that the imbalance is "worse in urban areas" due to market forces; turns out it's "worse in rural states"
So, where are all the men?
I mean they exist, they're just not going to college. This isn't China or India where they have a man-made gender imbalance because of all sorts of horrendous things. [Men are] out there, they're just not going to college. Last year about 35 percent more women than men graduated from college.
I can see where this is going…
The Department of Education projects that by the class of 2023, there will be 47 percent more women than men [graduating from college]. That's three women for every two men, essentially. Obviously, none of this would matter if we were all a little more open-minded about who we are willing to date and marry.
This'd be a great place to point out hypergamy is something in women's control.
But there have been multiple studies on this and it turns out Americans have become less likely, over the past 50 years, to marry and date across educational lines. So educational intermarriage—I don't know if that's a real term, maybe I just made it up—is at its lowest rate in 50 years.
Does that mean in the working-class dating market there are a lot of single men? What implications does that have?
Among non-college-educated singles ages 22 to 29, there are 9.4 million men and 7.1 million women. And if you look at the women in that age group who are non-college-educated, something like 30 percent of the women are married but only 22 percent of the men are married.
"Being unwilling to consider working-class guys affects women in ways that it doesn't affect men. It's totally unfair, and I get that."
I'm really confused. Why are women the victims of working class men getting ignored for being filthy plebs?
The other interesting thing—and you see this in China too—if you look at census data on fully-employed, non-college-educated men age 25 to 30, the ones who are married earn 20 percent more than the ones who are not married. Which tells me that in order to get married and attract a wife, you have to earn more and be more entrepreneurial and work harder.
TIL Hypergamy is not just an American thing.
American women where the more educated you are, the smaller your dating pool becomes? It feels that the smarter you are as a woman, the smaller your dating pool is, because women seem less likely to date men less intelligent than themselves.
It's not just women, both men and women are unlikely to date and marry across those lines. It just doesn't matter for the men because the pool of educated women is so vast that their own classism doesn't really punish them. But being unwilling to consider working-class guys affects women in ways that it doesn't affect men. It's totally unfair, and I get that, but it's not like only the women are choosy and the men are all open-minded.
Fucking hell, the egos on these girls…
23 year old interviewer asks her guest this question:
Fair enough. What are some of the things women can do to increase their likelihood of finding a partner, other than considering working-class guys? I mean, are there "women deserts" they can go to?
The answer to the solution of loneliness is obvious, but it hurts her pride too much to date a blue-collar dude, so it's men's fault they don't get into college enough. Idek
There are certain pockets. Far and away, the best dating market in the country for women is Silicon Valley,
Silicon Valley? I ain't sayin she's a gold digger but..
This is not about 'good men'. In 2013, this was ranked the second wealthiest place in America.
It has its own wealth management service for fuck's sake.
It's not like this is a place where philanthropists come to their duty either. SV's overlords are apparently notoriously stingy with their moolah. I blatantly leftist but II III
That's really interesting because it also speaks to tech's problem as a very, very male-dominated industry…
Right. Back East, the city with the best gender ratio is probably Columbus, Ohio, which has a real burgeoning tech community there.
I'm making a quantitative argument not a qualitative argument.I don't know if these [tech] guys are good guys or whether—I don't know if they can carry on a conversation or not.
Her response?
They can't.
Ouch. You heard it here guys; if you're working class, Nexted. If you're Beta Bucks without social skills, Nexted. If you own a fucking start-up or tech company but lack Game? Next.
I'm just telling you by the numbers I think they're less likely to act like dickheads because they don't have the same kind of leverage.
Why are more women graduating from college than men?
(presenter predictably evading the leading statement)
Obviously, if we'd had this conversation 40 years ago, this conversation would have looked different.
Wonder why that might have been, guys…
There would have been a lot more [college-educated] men than women. Once upon a time, colleges were discriminating blatantly against female applicants, thinking they only went to college to get their Mrs. degrees. High schools did a particularly wretched job when it came to teaching girls in math and sciences. So there are a whole host of reasons why girls underperformed in high school and were discriminated against when it came to college applications, but Title IX leveled the playing field.
Nope, should have seen it coming. Not enough women in college? Patriarchy. Not enough men in college? Lazy stupid losers.
Some reports about [the modern Title IX] for you.(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Title_IX)
It’s an unusual (but not unprecedented) legal approach, utilizing a federal statute designed to protect the people who historically have been victimized by institutional discrimination. To make a successful case under Title IX, the men must demonstrate that they were discriminated against based on their status as males.
Lawyers and Title IX experts say that’s unlikely.
“Title IX protects the victim because it was put in place to do that – because there aren’t other sorts of protection,” said Erin Buzuvis, a professor at Western New England School of Law and founder of the Title IX Blog. “Neither of these students have prevailed in demonstrating what happened to them was sex discrimination.”
[…] the complaint filed by Brian Harris against Saint Joseph’s makes similar claims, alleging that the university, via a haphazard investigatory process, “creates an environment in which a male accused is so fundamentally denied due process as to be virtually assured of a finding of guilt.”
The university has found itself guilty of Kafka-trapping, and nothing is being done about it!
It's clear that not all is anti-discriminatin with Title IX. But of course, this girl doesn't give much of a shit.
But I'm reluctant to entirely credit Title IX because women started attending college in other countries, where there was no Title IX, and the gains remained around the same time. So the question is, if it's not Title IX what is it?
A very thought-provoking question, might be worth another thread another day…
Claudia Golden, who is an economist at Harvard, her conclusion is that it's the [birth-control] pill.
I can believe that. Again, see Misandry Bubble. [And Sexual Utopia in Power for that matter].(https://dontmarry.files.wordpress.com/2009/03/sexualutopia.pdf)
Her argument is that the big driver of gains in female college enrollment is the expectation of workforce participation. If you're getting married at 21 or 22 and having kids soon thereafter, the payoff of going to college is very small. If you can plan your life with greater certainty and delay marriage and childbirth, the investment value of college goes up. So she credits the pill.
There's no mature response to this in retaliation; women should have the opportunity to go to college. It just should not be a right. Nor should they complain of the consequences. Supply: demand. Hypergamy=women's average demand>men's average supply, from women's POV
That kind of explains how we got to 50/50 enrollment; it doesn't explain how we got to 58/42. And my argument is that the old discrimination [against women] obscured a fundamental biological truth:
That pre-natal testosterone develops the brain as 'male' or 'female' in such ways that it dictates interest in, and indirectly performance in, specific subjects, which naturally delineates society into complimentary gender roles?
Girls' brains mature at a faster rate than boys' brains, girls mature [faster] socially and intellectually. They're about a year ahead of boys. When it comes to actual schoolwork, girls do their homework better, girls are more organized, they're less likely to be diagnosed with ADHD, they don't get put in jail [at the same rates].
Oh.
So I think girls have a developmental advantage when it comes to college preparation.
So at the rates we're going, is there going to have to be affirmative action for boys, to keep things even?
A lot of elite private colleges are already engaging in quiet, de-facto, under-the-table affirmative action for boys. I went to Brown. The acceptance rate for boys is 11 percent; for girls it's 7 percent. The worst example is Vassar. Their acceptance rate for boys is 34 percent and for girls it's 18 or 19 percent.
Affirmative action for boys is a bad thing, guys. Keep it secret, keep it safe!
What's interesting is that if you look at the top public universities that are bound by Title IX [when it comes to admissions], they all accept girls at a higher rate than boys.
Right, because—
Girls are better applicants.
MRW
Do you think that the attitude of men in their 30s and 40s who don't feel the need to settle down can be chalked up purely to the way the deck is stacked in their favour?
What? Why does this bitch keep asking leading inflammatory questions?
The one thing I never totally decided on was how much of this is conscious versus subconscious.
Ahh, the Nature v. Nurture debate again.
So when a young woman or a young man gets to a school [where there are a lot] more women than men, and there's this highly intense hook-up culture, is it, "Well, there are three of us for every two of them, I'm going to change my behavior as a result," or is it a "when in Rome" kind of thing?
Or is it that attitudes towards marriage are changing? Do you think that my generation just places less of a value on long-term romantic commitment?
Well, it's a chicken-and-egg thing. If marriage is harder to come by, do you seek it less? I mean, the marriage rate for women in Silicon Valley is much higher than New York's. And the divorce rate's lower too.
No shit.^
Wht comes next is perhaps the most useful piece of info in this piece of hypergamy-confirming self-victimising tripe.
What else did you find out about divorce?
It seems obvious that if women are in short supply then you're going to try harder to hold on to [your wife]. There's actually a lot of social science [research] on sex ratios that grows out of animal behavior and zoology. There's a study in the book I reference—what researchers will do is look at nominally monogamous species. They'll [mess] around with the sex ratios in a control population and take the ratio from 5:5 to six males for every four females to start. What they found is that the male desertion rate, once they made the population overly male, declined from 22 percent to 11 percent.
Because they don't have any other options.
How I image her face when she could say that
But wait for this. When they took it the other way and made it six females for every four males, the male desertion rate went from 22 percent to 52 percent. So the prevailing mating culture went from monogamy to polygamy, just by changing the prevailing sex ratio.
This explains quite well how one goes from traditional relationships+marriage, to hook-up; hypergamous monogamy v. polygamy. I will check back to see if other sources confirm this effect.
The argument is that it's actually an evolutionary adaptation, because in an environment in which females are scarce and you want to pass along your genes to the next generation, making big investments in parenting efforts make a lot of sense. But when females are plentiful, the best mating strategy emphasizes mating effort over parenting effort.
This is why Chad succeeds in an open SMP, Beta Bob in a closed classical patriarchal SMP.
As ever, our loveable lady-friend feels oppressed…
Is there any silver lining to this for women?
There has been some reaction from women who found [the book] life-affirming, because they realize it's not them. They had been blaming themselves for their lack of success [in the dating world], and this was kind of assuring in some way.
Basically, it's not your fault ladies. It's patriarchy. And stupid men! Everything is men's fault.
How do you comfort your single friends—"Oh, you'll find someone"—when statistically, many of them won't unless they lower their standards?
Birger gives a mature response from an lder guy who knows what matters:
See, I hate the "lower your standards thing," because I'm always thinking about my friend [who married a janitor] and I don't view [their marriage] as "lowering your standards." I view this as making a different kind of choice.
And as an older married guy, I also have something else to add: All marriage involves compromise. You'll learn this. Sometimes the fun part of marriage is working through the compromise and figuring out your comfort zones. So the "lowering your standards" thing ekes me a little bit—if lowering your standards means marrying an asshole, I'm with you. But if it means [marrying someone who] makes $60,000 instead of $600,000 I'm resisting that.
Good lad.
Guess what. She ignores and deflects. And sadly, he has to maintain his white knight credentials and reinforce she can be strong and independent if men aren't good enough for her.
More and more women are deciding to live independent lives and not get married; could that trend actually be the result of there just not being enough men?
It's very important to understand that I am not endorsing marriage. I am not endorsing monogamy. I think people can lead fulfilled lives without getting married.
You can also ask the same question about hookup culture. I'm not the morality police, but at the same time I kind of wonder if men and women—women in particular—would be less enthused about hookup culture if traditional relationships were more available. I don't know the answer to that, but I wonder.
What are your thoughts on this, pill sphere? Would hook-up culture exist if traditional relationships were still possible? Would most men prefer it that way, or the way it is? What do alphas prefer?
So is my generation headed for an absolute trainwreck of divorce and loneliness? It sounds like a perfect storm.
It does sound like a perfect storm. However, we are not voles or fish, we have a moral compass that animals do not. So my belief, my hope, is that once you shine a light on this stuff the behavior will change. I kind of believe that once everybody knows that guys are acting like pigs or that women are better off expanding their dating pool, the behavior will change.
…what? Men are pigs for taking advantage of an SMP that as I showed above, women created? Once again idek
I also think that [people will start] dating across educational lines. I think it's inevitable, given the way the numbers are, and actually if you look at the African-American community where there's almost twice as many women graduating from college as men, these [cross-educational] pairings are far more common. There's some Pew research data showing that African-American women are more likely to marry men [who are less educated than them.]
Hypogamy and inter-racial marriages would be a wonderful thing.
Are there any societies where men outnumber women, or where women have the power that men have in America?
I'm totally confused where this girl thinks men have all the power, when the entire article says more women . But anyway…
China. There was a semi-recent story in Bloomberg, and it quoted a young couple who were about to start having a family. The dad said, "Oh, I hope I have a girl, having a boy is just too expensive." Because in the middle-upper class in China, it's now accepted that in order to be marriageable a young man has to own his own apartment. In Shanghai, that could be $300,000 to $400,000, and he has to own a car, too. This creates pressure not only on the young man but on the family, to be able to afford to help him. It's a reverse dowry, essentially.
We never hear her response, but I'm guessing that this presenter thinks that financial slavery would be a wonderful idea!
tl;dr Maybe I got it wrong. Perhaps Vice is a Grrl-power pop-feminist blog. But for some reason I thought it was a dude-bro's safe space.egalitarian and progressive. Well, the above article on "where have all the good [college-educated] men gone?" reads like a man-shaming circle-jerk. And I did not cherry-pick, I practically quoted ad verbatim with commentary.
There's something troubling when the only satisfactory advice to a 23 year old young woman complaining that there are not enough men out there is not "lower your standards", but, "go to Silicon Valley and meet a nice rich guy in tech with good social skills."
Thanks for bearing with me. I made this low effort, because the amount of stupid, entitlement and solipsism was hurting me, and I have a feeling that few people want to do anything about affirmative action.

2015.03.25 20:59 bacon_hummers A list I made of movies where characters sing while driving in a car.

Over the past ten years or so, I have compiled this list of movies where characters sing while driving in a car (train/bus/motorcycle also seem to fit). This doesn't happen in all movies but I tend to remember movies where I see this occur more than I do others. I guess it makes me think the characters are happier.
